SCODA INTERNATIONAL SAFETY DAY : SAFETY FEATURES IN ACTION



                                     

Safety for both occupant and pedestrian has become a very crucial aspect for automobile manufactures around the world and none can deny that when it come to safety Scoda Auto is right up there with the best of them. With over 100 specialist employed at the Company’s Technical center at Mlada Boleslav working on various safety aspect of Scoda car including a Traffic Safety Research team which monitors and evaluate road accident in real world it is no surprise that Scoda’s car such as the Roomster , Superb and Yeti have all score the highest possible 5 star rating in the euro NCAP crash test.


The Scoda International Day was an event foe media from across Europe and Asia to get up close with safety expert from Scoda and even see some of the car safety feature and action and absorb a live crash test between two of the company car’s.
Imagine the scenario : a vehicle is traveling on a 2-lane highway at about 90km/h. the driver begins to doze off his vehicle veers into incoming traffic. Another car in opposite lane pull as much to the side of the road as possible and brakes to the halt. But a crash is in unavoidable and the earlier car plows into the latter at the offset heat an angle. Not what u might call totally uncommon scenario. The crash took place between a stationary Scoda Superb Combi and a Scoda Yeti which was moving at 90km/h under its own engine power.


Both the car has two adult sized crashed tests dummies in the back as well. Following the crash, official form the local free department did a quick inspection of the crash area, ensure that it was safe to technician to approach after which specialist from Scoda Traffic Safety Research team began to collect data for the various sensor attached to the car and the crash test dummies. The team also made a 3D scan of the accident site which would later be fed into crash simulation software.


 While Scoda engineer analyzed the data from the crash, the media representative were taking through various workshop with expert from different field of automotive safety. The workshop includes one which explained the various tools and methodology us by member of the Traffic Research Safety team to collect data from real life crash sides while another focused on both the Active and Passive safety features which come build into Scoda’s car.
There was also a workshop which spoke about Scoda Auto’s efforts to educate people about the aspect of road safety and demonstrated Scoda playful a website design to inculcated road and traffic sense in children. One of the most enjoyable activities though was the Test Drive workshop where the journalist could drive a few Scoda cars around the test course and put the car’s various electronic safety programmers to the test.

Safety Feature for SCODA

The tested model of Skoda Superb was introduced in Australia during 2009. The New Zealand launch was in 2008.
Dual front airbags, driver knee airbag, side airbags and head-protecting side curtains are standard equipment. Antilock brakes (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist, electronic stability control (ESC) and tire pressure monitoring are also standard. Intelligent seat belt reminders are fitted to both front seats. The front seat belt buckles are mounted on the seats and the upper anchorages are adjustable. These features improve the fit of the seat belt.

Pretensioners are fitted to the front seat belts to reduce slack in the event of a crash. A three point seat belt is fitted to the centre rear seat. This provides better protection than a two point (lap) seat belt.

 Anti-lock brakes

ABS brakes automatically sense when a tire has stopped rotating under extreme braking, and will modulate the brake pressure to allow the tire to rotate. This increases the vehicles ability to turn while braking.

Stability control

Stability control automatically senses when the vehicles handling limits have been exceeded and reduces engine power and/or applies select brakes to help prevent the driver from losing control of the vehicle.

Front-impact airbags

Front-impact airbags for the driver and passenger have been designed to protect the head during a frontal crash.

Side impact airbags

Side impact airbags for the front seats have been designed to protect the torso during a side impact collision.

Overhead airbags

Overhead airbags are used to protect the occupant's heads in the event of a side collision or rollover.

Knee airbags

Knee airbags help to protect the occupants lower extremities from serious injury in the event of an accident.

Pretensioners

Seatbelt pretensioners automatically tighten seatbelts to place the occupant in the optimal seating position during a collision.

Anti-whiplash

Anti-whiplash head restraints actively react to rear collision forces and craddle the occupants head in an effort to reduce the likelihood of a whiplash injury.

Security system

The vehicle is equipped with a means of anticipating and/or detecting unwanted vehicle intrusion. The vehicle is equipped with an ignition disable device that will prevent the engine from starting if the correct original manufacturer key is not used.
